FROM KICKBOXING TO BARRE: HOW TO SWITCH UP YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE

After four years of kickboxing on a consistent basis, it was time for a change. While I really enjoyed kickboxing (I was even an instructor), it started to become mentally and physically taxing, which were signs I needed to switch things up.

It took me about a year to find a new workout that was right for me. I was looking for a fitness studio that held classes and focused on a particular workout like kickboxing, but also one that worked my body in different ways.

Right before the new year, I committed to barre. Barre is a low-impact workout that focuses on high intensity movements to lift and tone muscles. Equipment is also involved like an exercise ball, weights, and resistant bands.

Changing my workout routine was, and still is, an adjustment (which I expected). The biggest change for me is having to schedule my classes in advance. This is totally new, but something I know I will adapt to.

I still think kickboxing is a great workout, and maybe I’ll revisit the sport in the future, but for now, instead of punching and kicking, I’ll be tucking and shaking.

Here are six tips to help you switch up your workout routine:

  1. Do your research. If you’re thinking about trying something completely new, check out the brand’s website and social pages. Inquire about prices and learn if you need to schedule classes in advance. Finally, read reviews online and ask your friends if they know about it.
  2. Try it out first. Before jumping right in, you might want to take a trial class to make sure the workout is right for you. A lot of workout studios run a “first class free” promo. If not, look on Groupon for a bundle of classes for a lower rate.
  3. Have an open mind. Changing your workout routine can be nerve-wracking. You’re on a new schedule, in a new space, and working your body in a new way. But that’s not a bad thing! Look at it as an opportunity to start fresh, meet new people, and learn new things.
  4. Look good, feel good. Wear your best workout outfit on your first day and leave any insecurities at the door.
  5. Be confident and smile. You’re the new “guy” in town. Smile as you walk through the door and introduce yourself to the staff. Heck, why not strike a conversation with a member or two?
  6. Have fun! Working out isn’t always about having big muscles, it’s about having fun and feeling good about yourself.

Remember, changing your workout routine is only the first step. Being consistent with it and thriving is next. You got this!
